HBDS - Something worth smiling about

Bright Start Education Support Programme was founded in 2008 by Sharon Scudamore and Sally Whitford, her daughter, as a Non-Profit Organization (NPO) and Public Benefit Organisation (PBO) with the aim of addressing the social injustices in Hout Bay.

Bright Start believes that access to quality and holistic education builds intellectual capital and is vital to creating a flourishing society and ensuring lasting positive social and behavioural transformation.

Starting with only seven children in 2008, today Bright Start supports 36 learners, and following a snowball effect, has a positive impact on more than 200 people in the local communities. The young beneficiaries are successfully integrated into a more challenging and diverse school environment, while their families receive guidance and a network of support from local businesses and service providers.

One of these partners is the Hout Bay Dental Studio (HBDS). HBDS is at the forefront of dental science and technology and present courses to colleagues throughout the country. Even more impressive is that they have been providing this world-class service to the children of Bright Start, at a nominal fee of R50-R100 a visit, for almost a decade!

One of the children on the Bright Start programme is Riley (6). His devoted father, Johann Julies said the following: “When taking Riley to the dentist, Dr Meyer, I am able to sit in the rooms and I see that she really does care. She educates us about dental health and takes her time with Riley. She is very adamant that we should maintain a high level of dental hygiene to ensure that his teeth are always in good shape. This level of personal care would cost so much more. Not only that, but my son is not afraid to go to the dentist. He really enjoys the personal attention he receives. He walks out every time with a balloon and a hygiene kit (no lollipops)!”

Dr Meyer is just one of the dentists and dental hygienists dedicated to making sure everyone has access to excellent dental care at HBDS. Impacting all the communities of Hout Bay has been a priority for this dental practice since Dr Andy Effting opened its doors in 1983. “The most rewarding part of my work as a dentist is providing the highest quality of dental care available anywhere in the world,” says Dr Andy.

Now isn’t that worth smiling about?
