From the 7th to 13th of September , 7 teams of runners will take on the might of Table Mountain. Our mother city’s icon. One of the seven natural wonders of the world. They will follow the 37km trail around and over the mountain. Each day. For seven days. Their goal: to change the lives of 7 children (or more) needing facial surgery.
The brain child of Dr Jean van Lierop who put out a challenge to Cipla Miles for Smiles Ultra Runners – David Grier and Andrew Stuart – to join him in his quest to run the TMC route 7 times, over 7 days. The 37km route is a tough and challenging trail run, for experienced trail runners who are both fit and capable. There is nothing supplied, no food no water.
So Why do It?
More than 200,000 children are born with facial deformities like cleft lips and palates world-wide every year. It is estimated that every 3 minutes a child is born this way. Many of these children will never have access to the healthcare that could see them live a normal life. They will be ostracized. Discarded by society.
During this week of blood, sweat, trail and tears these teams will be raising awareness of the plight of these children. They will raise much needed funds, and each team will directly sponsor the surgery of two children.
