Hout Bay Dental Studio is a proud supporter of the Bright Start Education Support Programme. Bright Start believes that access to quality and holistic education builds intellectual capital and is vital to creating a flourishing society and ensuring lasting positive social and behavioural transformation.

Something to smile about!

Sharon Scudamore and her daughter Sally Whitford founded the Bright Start Education Support Programme in 2008 as a Non-Profit Organization (NPO) and Public Benefit Organisation (PBO) to help to address the social injustices in Hout Bay.

Starting with only seven children in 2008, Bright Start now supports 36 learners, and following a snowball effect, has a positive impact on more than 200 people in the local communities. The young beneficiaries are successfully integrated into a more challenging and diverse school environment, while their families receive guidance and a network of support from local businesses and service providers.

One of these partners is the Hout Bay Dental Studio. HBDS is at the forefront of dental care, science and technology, and our team of dentists present courses to colleagues throughout the country. Even more impressive is that we've provided this world-class service to the children of Bright Start at a nominal fee for more than a decade!

One of the children on the Bright Start programme is Riley (6). His devoted father, Johann Julies, said the following: "When taking Riley to the dentist, Dr Meyer, I can sit in the rooms, and I see that she does care. She educates us about dental health and takes her time with Riley. She is very adamant that we should maintain a high level of dental hygiene to ensure that his teeth are always in good shape. This level of personal care would cost so much more. Not only that, but my son is not afraid to go to the dentist. He enjoys the personal attention he receives. He walks out every time with a balloon and a hygiene kit (no lollipops)!"

Dr Meyer is just one of the dentists and dental hygienists dedicated to making sure everyone has access to excellent dental care at HBDS. Impacting all the communities of Hout Bay has been a priority for this dental practice since Dr Andy Effting opened its doors in 1983.

"The most rewarding part of my work as a dentist is providing the highest quality of dental care available anywhere in the world," says Dr Andy Effting.

Now isn't that worth smiling about?
