Dr Andy Effting
Founder & Clinical Director
Andy founded Hout Bay Dental Studio in 1983 after graduating with top honours from the University of the Witwatersrand in 1981. Under his leadership, HBDS has grown into a multidisciplinary practice offering advanced implantology and aesthetic care.

Dr Ivonne Meyer
Dentist
An aesthetic specialist fluent in English, Afrikaans, German and Dutch, Ivonne trained at Stellenbosch University and in the Netherlands. With a postgraduate diploma in aesthetic dentistry, she is passionate about adhesive techniques and preventative restorations.

Dr Nic Pretorius
Dentist
Nic joined the practice in 2003 and brings decades of experience, along with a calm and gentle approach. With a focus on holistic, minimally invasive care, he works equally well with children, restoring smiles and performing minor surgery with patience and precision.

Dr David Malan
Dentist & Implantologist
David qualified at the University of the Western Cape in 2016 and holds a postgraduate diploma in implantology. He combines evidence-based holistic care with digital techniques – including CAD-CAM restorations – to achieve precise, long-lasting results.

Periodontist & Implantologist
A 2002 Stellenbosch graduate with advanced training in implantology and periodontal care, Emil brings surgical expertise and specialist care, ensuring comprehensive treatment within the practice.

Dr Grethé Koen
Endodontist
Grethé graduated from the University of the Western Cape in 2011 and went on to complete Diplomas in Implantology and Endodontics. Since relocating from Gauteng to the Western Cape in 2021, she has been practicing general dentistry in Citrusdal while focusing on specialised endodontic care at HBDS.

We’ve built our reputation on more than 40 years of trusted care, anchored in deep professional commitment and service excellence. As founding members of the South African Academy of Aesthetic Dentistry (SAAAD), our team has consistently led the way in aesthetic dental innovation.
Our founder, Dr Andy Effting, is a founding member and past president of SAAAD and continues to serve on its board. He’s also a fellow of the International Team for Implantology, where he served as Cape Town Study Club director for several years.
Every member of our team regularly attends advanced education workshops and seminars, focusing on surgical techniques, aesthetic restoration, digital dentistry and holistic protocols. Our commitment to ongoing learning keeps us among the most trusted and highly regarded dental practices in Cape Town.
Our Community Commitment
At Hout Bay Dental Studio, serving our local community goes far beyond dental care. For more than a decade, we’ve proudly partnered with the Bright Start Education Support Programme, ensuring that children from under-resourced families receive world-class dental attention at a nominal fee.
Founded in 2008, Bright Start began with just seven children. Today, it supports 36 learners and impacts more than 200 people through its wider family network. HBDS helps by providing essential dental care and education, helping these children build confidence and healthier smiles.
The programme reflects our belief that oral health is part of overall wellbeing. As Dr Meyer shared, Bright Start families receive gentle, educational care that makes visits stress-free.
